Trust vs. Mistrust
The first stage of Erikson’s psychosocial development is Trust vs. mistrust. From ages 0-1, infants look for someone that they can trust and that will protect them from the confusing new world. Hopefully, the child will have someone near them that provides them with enough affection that they can develop feelings of trust. Children that feel trust towards their caregiver will be less fearful when they come across something new. Children that do not have consistent love and attention will be more fearful and anxious when put in a changed environment.
From the day I was born my parents have always been their for me and showing their consistent love. I was able to develop the sense of trust because I had them by my side. Even when my parents were working I always had our stay at home nanny to care for me (I still talk to her every Wednesday). When my parents would come home from work they would play with me constantly. Their favorite thing to do was play the tickling game because they loved to hear my cute baby laugh. For a while after I was born I only liked men to pick me up. Anytime a woman would try and pick me up I would scream and cry. Even though my mom was equally as loving and nice, I only preferred my dad and grandpa. Later on I became to trust my mom more and develop a relationship with her.
