Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt
The second stage is autonomy vs. Shame and doubt. In this stage toddlers (age 1-3) learn how to perform certain tasks and begin to learn new things. Many toddlers are able to make decisions like where to crawl, what toy to play with, what to wear, and what to eat. The toddler becomes more independent because they are being encouraged to be themselves and do things without the help of a parent. It is really important for a parent to encourage their child to do their own thing (pick out an outfit) even if it turns out completely disastrous. If the child does something wrong, it is necessary that the parent does not scold the child too much.
From ages one to three, I developed into a very adventurous and girly child. I decided that my favorite toy was a blonde doll and would lug her everywhere. I was constantly seen in many different shades of pink and always had a bow in my hair. I became very picky and decided I didn’t like cheerios, but instead preferred teddy grahams. I also realized that my favorite fruit was strawberries and would beg for them constantly throughout the day. In this stage I also liked to try new things because I was curios about everything around me. If an adult glove were near me I would attempt to place my tiny hands in it.
