Identity vs. Role Confusion
Stage five or identity vs. role confusion occurs in a person’s teen year up until there twenties. In this stage children become more independent and try and find their place in the world. Testing boundaries and trying many new things is a major part of being a teenager and finding your self. Also teenagers want to see what life as an adult will be like so many find jobs or experience sexual behaviors. If a teen doesn’t find their self in this stage then they will be confused as to where they fit in the world.
As a teenager in stage five, I feel like I know who I am and what I want to do with my life. Even though the picture of my ideal future may change, I still know basically what I want (family, a good job, and great friendships). I sometimes test boundaries with my parents (stay out to late) because I want to feel like an adult. Staying out late and going places without permission is all part of adult life and partaking in those activities make me feel like one.
